BEHIND THE LINE UP: FRICTION

February 15, 2015

This has been an exciting year for the team behind Destiny. In August we celebrated our 20th Anniversary with a historic show at Kool Haus with Andy C smashing a 3 hour set. This celebration placed us in the spot as being North America's longest running promotions company, and we have no plans of stopping. On October 26th inside Sound Academy we will be celebrating another milestone, this being our 10th Anniversary Halloween Rave, FREAKOUT. This event has been one of the go to Halloween events in Toronto for the bass music enthusiasts, with past acts including Ed Rush and Optical, TC, Loadstar, Dillon Francis, and Rusko alongside many of Toronto's great local talent.

This year we are bringing in a great mix of artists across the bass music board. Freakout 2013 will host the legendary Roni Size, Friction, the Toronto favourite 12th Planet as well as the return of Rusko as he debuts his newly perfected Drum and Bass sounds. Our local heroes Mr. Brown, Hydee, Lush and Rick Toxic will be there to support the already massive lineup. This combination of talent alongside the legendary crowd of Destiny soldiers will create what is guaranteed to be a terrifyingly epic Halloween celebration.

At Destiny we love to make sure our party goers are as informed about the artists on our line ups as they can be. Not just to learn something new, but to help get everyone more excited about the event and give you a taste of what you can expect when you arrive. This years talent needs little introduction, but in case you have been living under a music deprived rock for the past few years some background info will help in getting you ready for this years Freakout.

Allow us to introduce the first artist of our "Behind The Line Up" series... the Drum and Bass badman: Friction

FRICTION

This man can easily be regarded as one of the hardest working men in the drum and bass scene. Not only an award winning DJ and Producer, he is also the label head of Shogun Audio while hosting his own weekly BBC Radio 1 show every Saturday night. Friction (Ed Keeley) is part of the Brighton born talent crew and is regarded by Pete Tong as being "one of Drum and Bass's Big Dogs.' And lets face it, if you have the most powerful man in electronic music biggigng you up, the dude is obviously doing something right. Friction has been at it for the past eight years but has been involved in the scene much longer, an advantage to have amongst the relatively younger generation of producers out there. Respecting the past while growing with the future is a mindset that any true talent needs to have and Friction definitely owns this. In listening to his weekly show you will hear a wicked mix of everything from old school jungle beats to some of the most exclusive unreleased records by the up and comers of DNB.

When he isn't preparing for his work with BBC Radio 1 you can find Friction either in the studio or touring. His studio time has definitely been paying off lately as he has been slamming out some great collaboration and remix projects. His track 'King Pin' done with Skream became and instant hit when it came out earlier this year and his latest track "Long Gone Memory" is set to take off. He has also reworked the likes of Wretch 32 and Example. His own track 'Led Astray' went to No.8 on the UK Independent Charts thanks to support from his BBC Radio 1 colleagues and rightfully so as that is a track still heard in a variety of sets.

His tour schedule was in his prime this year having played close to 25 festivals this year alone. Between his home studio, the Radio 1 studios and touring it's hard to believe that he has anytime left to dedicate to one of the most talented labels in Drum and Bass. Shogun Audio has a roster that reads like a dream festival line up. Icicle, K-Tee, Rockwell, and Spectrasoul are all exclusive signings, with SPY, Camo & Krooked, Shockone, The Prototypes, Total Science and TeeBee having released on the label as well.

Friction has the act of balancing between these projects down to a science and the hard work has without a doubt paid off in full. In the past Friction has cleaned up at the Drum and Bass Arena and Knowledge Award shows.
