DILLON FRANCIS: Get to Know

October 5, 2012

Some of you may have noticed a new sound at the raves you’ve been going to in the past year or so. Its not the sound of fresh-to-the-scene ravers dressed in neon and glowsticks screaming at each other through clenched jaws, or the song ‘Levels’ being played over and over to the point you would rather be deaf than hear it again (although these are both rave-realities). Instead, it is the wobbly, housey, dancehall sounds of moombahton coming through the speakers from DJs of all genres of EDM. The Don of this style…. Dillon Francis.

The talented and hilarious 24 year old DJ/Producer has been dominating this genre for the past few years. By blending the sounds of Dutch House and Dancehall and anything else in between to a BPM of 110, you are left with the sounds of quick drums on top of a thick bassline that you can’t help but shake your ass to. This sound can be heard in his successful releases such as his remix of Clockworks 'Hulk’, his tune ‘Masterblaster’ and arguably his most popular ‘I.D.G.A.F.O.S’ (meaning: I Dont Give a F**k or Shit, a title truly representing his care free attitude to producing, DJ’ing and apparently just life in general).

After dropping a few Rusko-esque dubstep tracks such as ‘Swasher’ and ‘Take me High’ on his Swashbuckler EP back in 2010 he started working closely with the legendary producer Stretch Armstrong and then with Dave Nadda, the godfather of moombahton. Through Nadda, Dillon developed a passion for the moombahton sound which Nadda pioneered. Francis then networked the hell out of the scene spreading his name and sound, which eventually landed him in a room with Diplo, another producer who has helped bring the genre to the popularity it is now and who Francis still works very closely with. The two produced ‘Que Que’ which was featured on his EP Westside! and which was also released with a ridiculous music video.

Francis’ rise to moombah fame can be owed to Westside! which was released back in early 2011 on Diplo’s label, Mad Decent. His track I.D.G.A.F.O.S followed soon after and effortlessly elevated him to the top of the scene. Francis’ has remixed the likes of Flux Pavillion, Zedd,  Steve Aoki and Kill the Noise with great success and has teamed up with Jack Beats, and Cory Enemy on production. He even teamed up with the dubstep master, Doctor P, on releasing the track ‘Music is Dead’ on Circus Record’s moombahton EP ‘Mr. Mongoose’s Fantastic Weekend'.

This man cannot be stopped. He slayed the festival scene this summer and has been touring Europe, the UK, and North America consistently, with this being his second time in Toronto this year alone. His sets are a blend of everything from moombahton, dubstep, house, and some remixes of DNB. His hilarious I.D.G.A.F.O.S attitude really makes him standout in the crowd of DJs and producers whom often appear sleep deprived, overworked or who seem take their careers way too seriously. If you want to waste a solid hour of your time but laugh historically I recommend you check out his youtube channel. He does everything from imitate A-Track (check out their track money maker released on Fool’s Gold), hand out tacos in LA to raise 'DJ Awareness' to documenting his time at "EDC Alaska".. seriously, it’s funny shit.

It is evident that his philosophy on life carries over to his music, and it is here that other producers and DJs need to step back and take note. Fun, care-free, and bass loving sounds are what this dude brings, and when he comes to Freakout October 27th we can expect just that plus more in his set that will make this THE party of the year.

Check out the recent mix he did at New York City’s Electric Zoo Festival back in August where you can hear the likes of Chase & Status, Knife Party and Diplo blended into a eclectic mix that left no one standing still.
