This year the Drum and Bass gods are clearly on our side, for Toronto is lucky to be hosting the last stop of the World of Drum and Bass Tour on the last night of this years Bass Week. Touring across North America with stops in NYC, Vegas, a stop in Miami for WMC and a handful of cities in between, WODNB will be using Toronto's Annex Wreckroom for the tours finale on March 30th.
WONDB tours the UK and Europe frequently, bringing with it some massive names in drum and bass. This North American tour in particular is bringing a great mix of artists that will make all lovers of the genre happy, whether you prefer your Drum and Bass dark and heavy, jump up, or want your heart strings plucked with some melodic and liquid vibes - this years line up offers a wicked diversity. On the tours roster we have: LTJ Bukem, DJ SS, The Prototypes, Blockhe4d, Cabbie and the MC stylings of the legendary Skibadee and MC Bizzi. Not all artists of the tour are making all the stops however, so Toronto we can expect to see: Grooverider, SS, and Skibadee which all though not the full WODNB roster is making the finale, it is still an amazing lineup.
Grooverider, for any true heads of Drum and Bass, is a houseld name. Rising to fame alongside Fabio, whom he held down a resident spot on BBC Radio 1 with for years, singing off for the last time in March 2012. Grooverider has helped shape the electronic music scene since the 80s, where he hosted radio shows on the Britian's infamous Pirate Radio Stations spinning the likes of house, breakbeat and the finding his home within drum and bass and starting his own label Prototype Recordings. In the past years Grooverider has most definetly focused his attention on DJ'ing with minimal releases.
Check out the momentous last show brought to us by Grooverider alongside Fabio, this mix is still one of my favourites of all time, taking you on an emotional historical jungle journey.
DJ SS has had an impressive DJ career, starting off as a scratch DJ under the name Scratchenstein in the hip hop world before being drawn into drum and bass like a moth to a flame. SS later started up his own Drum and Bass imprint Formation Records. SS is not new to touring with the WODNB, having been a part of the North American tours for many years past.
Skibadee has become a common name in past years on the Toronto drum and bass circuit, making multiple appearances in our city each year. Skiba is THE drum and bass MC, winning 'Best MC' awards at all drum and bass award shows held, year after year. A nice change of pace this year though is that he recently released a track on Viper Recordings alongside Lily McKenzie titled 'Never Gonna Break Me' which is a complete change of direction for this badman MC who spits the biggest of game on the mics.
All Drum and Bass heads need to reach to this event at Annex Wreckroom on March 30th! Such a perfect way to end Bass Week with some legendary drum and bass and MC stylings.
