The excitement is building for Bass Week and one of the biggest names of the week is Hospital Records' High Contrast. He will be playing alongside other Hospitality DJs Netsky, and Camo and Krooked, on March 24th inside the Kool Haus. High Contrast's fourth studio album 'The Agony and The Ecstasy' was recently released on February 27th, and I personally am loving it!
I had a chance to catch up with High Contrast earlier this week to ask him a few questions
Ashlee: What was the inspiration for your newest album, 'The Agony and the Ecstasy'?
High Contrast: The inspiration for my album came from listening to a lot of classical music, and from paintings of the same period. Artists then were making lot of work based on religious themes, even if they weren't religious themselves. So I wanted to make something that had the epic and grand feel of that kind of work but in a modern, secular, drum n bass way! If that makes any sense.
Ashlee: What is your most treasured piece of equipment in your studio?
High Contrast: I don't really use any external hardware in my studio, it's all just inside the computer. My favourite virtual synth is called Ace, which is very cheap and straight forward but just has a great sound. I used it on a few of the tracks on the new album.
Ashlee: Who do you think we should be looking out for in the drum and bass world?
High Contrast: New signings to Hospital Fred V and Grafix are getting a lot of attention at the moment with their productions, and I support their tunes in my DJ sets.
Ashlee: Do you have any funny tour stories?
High Contrast: I'll be filming the tour we are doing this time to use in the music video for Netsky's next single so if you see me with a camera, get involved!
Ashlee: What is your favourite place to travel to?
High Contrast: My favourite place to visit is Tokyo. It's great to DJ there, but I also just love spending time in the city as Japanese culture fascinates me and the food is so good!
Ashlee: So you're coming through Toronto soon for the Hospitality show. What is your favourite thing about Toronto?
High Contrast: I love coming to Toronto too, always such a sick party and I find the people to be really good to hang out with
Ashlee: Thanks for this quick interview, one last question. Give me one word to describe what we have to look forward to when Hospitality lands in Toronto?
High Contrast: One word to describe the forthcoming Hospitality show is: GARGANTUAN!
